The Ghana Music Awards have over the years, been one event that people in the music industry, and fans alike, often look forward to every year in over 10 years. It has seen a change in sponsors over the years from MTN Ghana to Vodafone Ghana. MTN had a long run with some winners being Icons for their branding. I hope Vodafone Ghana will also go in that direction or a better one for years to come.
The 3rd of May 2014 saw the 15th edition of the Awards night, dubbed 2014 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards taking place at the Accra International Conference Centre in Accra. May be it about time organizers start thinking of a rotation around the regions in Ghana since it’s a Ghana Awards event and not an ‘Accra Music Awards’.
RED CARPET
The show, just like the previous one, started with a ‘red carpet’ session. Two hosts positioned at vantage locations, seems to randomly invite one popular person to talk. It was the usual question “who are you wearing?” with very interesting responses. Some mentioned local fashion designers, others, designers not in Ghana. At least, popular people in Ghana believes in Dan Lartey of blessed memory domestication campaign, this time when it comes to fashion. One response which caught my attention was what one guest said in response to “who are you wearing?”, She said “I went into my closet and picked one of my old clothes”, I can see she didn't go through the stress of going buy a new clothe for the event. This time around, the lady hosting the red carpet event was not looking ‘hyper’ like the previous year’s female host. She was calm and went about her work. Her male counterpart was not doing badly, he was just doing too much talking. It was just surprising to hear them ask how many nominations some of the artistes they interviewed had received. I thought as a host of such an event, you should already know that and not ask the artiste. Repetitive questions kept being recycled but it went on well
MAIN EVENT
The show finally commenced, and as usual, it didn't start at the advertised time, about two (2) hours late. There was a good opening music which got some cheers from the audience. Every year, people look out for something special on the awards nights. It could be an artiste fumbling, wrong name being mentioned or someone falling on stage as it has happened in past events. Fortunately, no one fell and no fumbling.
There were the usual music performance interludes from Ghana and our cousins from Nigeria. Although some of the performance were A+, some were just not even above average, and this made the program seems to be a drag. There were some old school musicians which excited the audience. This time around, the audience didn’t just sit or pose whenever there was a music performance on stage, they took part by dancing and applauding. Our own self acclaimed fastest rapper was my best performer for the night. One of our ‘foreign’ musicians, who the host introduced as nearly being our brother-in-law, to me was the just average despite the hype.
The performance of Dj for the night made me miss the usual suspect who has been spinning the tables in the past events. I guess I expected too much from this new one, would give him a ‘C’ rating.
The main host of the show did their best to control affairs, seems rehearsed and they did it with little hitches. I wouldn't want to talk about their clothes because that would be a long essay so would leave it for another day
The awards presentation went on smoothly, with some winners coming on stage with a whole entourage to collect one award. We cannot blame them too much, they also want to be seen. The downside of that session was that some of the artistes didn't show up to collect their award. Fans of such artistes must have been a little disappointed since they voted for them but couldn't see their favourite on stage to pick the award. I think once you are nominated and the date for the event fixed, you should make time to attend. One award came with a brand new Hyundai i10 car, but looking at the size of the car, I wonder if the winner can comfortably drive the it, unless he pulls the seats back to the fullest.
Then came the moment that no one anticipated, it got lots of the people at the event surprised. Two reality show participants who are publicly known to be dating came on stage to present an award. The man started saying nice things about the woman, which was normal, only for the man to go down in his knees, takes out a ring and propose to the lady. For a moment I felt it was one of the stage antics but one can hear from the gentleman’s voice he meant business. The lady looked a little hesitant to respond to the proposal, she finally yes to her man still wearing a surprise look
Overall, the event went on smoothly. Apart from the usual late start of event and the some artistes not showing up to collect their awards, all went well. I will rate it 3.5 out of 5
There are some people who do not agree with the winner of ‘Artiste of the Year’ award, the only advice to them is that, in the next event, do well to vote as many times you want for the person you to win the biggest award. It is one of the few voting events where you are not tied to one vote per person. So do well to vote if you are really a fan and want your artiste to win
